Mobile and Tablet Multi-Game app
MTV Networks’ first mobile gaming app
AddictingGames, an MTV Networks property had a successful online casual games business and needed a mobile app to represent its fresh, ever changing content, while still being easy to use and fun.
It was an ambitious project to convert 30 Flash based casual games to mobile interface and interactions, create a catalog UI around them, as well as a friend system, high scores, achievements, and a sharing/challenge system.
My role
PRODUCT STRATEGY
IA, WIREFRAMES AND INTERACTION DESIGN
design and build usability lab
USER TESTING and research
I worked with the product team to define all features of the game catalog, out-of-game experience, and social features.
I created the wireframes, interface and interaction standards, and oversaw graphic design and implementation. I also managed and executed usability tests to validate and improve the designs along the way.
Building a lab and testing it
Since we didn't have a lot of collective experience with mobile apps and were blazing new trails in multi-game app design, we needed to know how what we were building would perform.
I designed and built a usability lab for desktop, tablet and mobile testing to observe participants using the app and their experience. The setup included a device camera, face and body posture cameras and supported remote viewing as well.
Success and additional platforms
The app reached the #1 free app in the App Store within 1 week of being released and held the spot for a month.
I was asked to design an Android version and was given carte blanche to design a custom iPad experience as well.
Interactive prototype
I had an interactive prototype created of the main page in the iPad app to demonstrate the transitions, curves and timing of switching the device from portrait to landscape.
This approach immediately gained approval through the highest levels of the company.
